چکیده
Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte, Belo Horizonte MG, Brazil: MD, PhD, Department of Neurology.; MD, Department of Neurology. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a frequent cause of respiratory infection in humans, especially schoolchildren, adolescents and young adults, accounting for about 20% of cases of pneumonia in this age group. However, little is known about its extrapulmonary manifestations, with the central nervous system (CNS) being the most common extrapulmonary site which can be affected during any phase of the disease. About 1 to 10% of patients with pneumonia caused by M. pneumoniae require hospitalization due to some neurological complication related to this infection, and M. pneumoniae is possibly one of the leading causes of encephalitis in older children and adolescents. We report here the case of an adolescent girl with an uncommon manifestation of neurological complications characterized by the involvement of the brainstem and cerebellum likely caused by the M. pneumoniae in the absence of atypical pneumonia.

SIMULTANEOUS DETECTION OF CHLAMYDIA PNEUlvlONIAE AND MYCOPLASMA PNEUMONIAE BY PCR
Both C. pneumoniae and M. pneumoniae are common causes of respiratory tract infection. At present, both are still diagnosed in the laboratory retrospectively by serology. This is despite many publications which indicate that PCR, which is not retrospective, is extremely good at detecting these organisms. We thought that a single PCR test which could detect both organisms simultaneously in a...
متن کاملIsolation and detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae from cell culture by culture and PCR.
Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is one of the major species of mycoplasmas which could contaminate cell cultures. Identification of M. pneuminae is significant because Mycoplasmas could contaminate and have unsuitable effect on the cell cultures. Rapid detection of these contaminations is so important and it could be significant role in preventing and controlling of contamination in cell cul...
متن کاملMycoplasma pneumoniae as a causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia in children: clinical features and laboratory diagnosis
BACKGROUND Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in children with CAP and find clinical, radiological and laboratory features helpful to diagnose Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. Furthermore, we evaluated the value of serology, real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and cul...
متن کاملClinical, radiographic and hematological characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical, hematological and radiographic characteristics of children hospitalized for Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. METHOD The study population consisted of 190 children between 3 months and 16 years old, hospitalized for radiographically confirmed pneumonia. Patients were divided into two groups, to wit: 95 children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia, as diagno...
متن کاملSevere community-acquired pneumonia caused by macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae in a 6-year-old boy.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is the commonest agent causing atypical pneumonia in children. Macrolides have long been used in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia not responsive to beta-lactams alone. In this report, we describe the first locally acquired paediatric patient with severe community-acquired pneumonia caused by macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae, possessing an A-to-G trans...
